Herman Witsius (1636-1708), pasteur et théologien néerlandais, est né à Enkhuisen, en Hollande du Nord, et a étudié à Groningue, Leiden et Utrecht. Il fut ordonné au saint ministère, devenant pasteur à Westwoud en 1656, puis à Wormeren, Goesen et Leeuwaarden, et devint professeur de théologie successivement à l’Université de Franeker en 1675 puis à l’Université d’Utrecht en 1680. En 1698, il entra à l’Université de Leiden, où il mourut.

Witsius a apporté d’importantes contributions à la fois à la pratique pastorale et à la théologie systématique, en particulier la théologie de l’alliance. A cet égard, il est un éminent représentant de la théologie réformée hollandaise pendant la Nadere Reformatie, écrivant à la fin de la Haute Orthodoxie – dans la ligne de François Turretin en Suisse.

Witsius écrivait et prêchait avec clarté et précision, sans jamais les séparer d’un zèle pastoral et d’un cœur bienveillant.
