Herman Witsius (1636–1708)

Herman Witsius

Her­man Wit­sius (1636–1708), pas­teur et théo­lo­gien néer­lan­dais, est né à Enkhui­sen, en Hol­lande du Nord, et a étu­dié à Gro­ningue, Lei­den et Utrecht. Il fut ordon­né au saint minis­tère, deve­nant pas­teur à West­woud en 1656, puis à Wor­me­ren, Goe­sen et Leeu­waar­den, et devint pro­fes­seur de théo­lo­gie suc­ces­si­ve­ment à l’U­ni­ver­si­té de Fra­ne­ker en 1675 puis à l’U­ni­ver­si­té d’U­trecht en 1680. En 1698, il entra à l’U­ni­ver­si­té de Lei­den, où il mou­rut.

Wit­sius a appor­té d’im­por­tantes contri­bu­tions à la fois à la pra­tique pas­to­rale et à la théo­lo­gie sys­té­ma­tique, en par­ti­cu­lier la théo­lo­gie de l’al­liance. A cet égard, il est un émi­nent repré­sen­tant de la théo­lo­gie réfor­mée hol­lan­daise pen­dant la Nadere Refor­ma­tie, écri­vant à la fin de la Haute Ortho­doxie – dans la ligne de Fran­çois Tur­re­tin en Suisse.

Wit­sius écri­vait et prê­chait avec clar­té et pré­ci­sion, sans jamais les sépa­rer d’un zèle pas­to­ral et d’un cœur bien­veillant.
